Healthcare: Healing Space

Cultural Connection, Yellowknife, Canada
A community healing space on the existing hospital grounds in Yellowknife, Northern Canada

The First Nation’s peace dance is done to promote social, cultural and physical healing as well as peace.  When the dancer’s head bows, eagle down floats out of the headdress and spreads peace.  The building’s angled columns bow to the water and the power of the great creator, the sky, reflected in it.  Upon entering the building, the user descends underground, also bowing to the power of the earth, before beginning a journey of light and health.  Like the down of the headdress, the smoke from the prayers of the users exits the top of the building and flows over the land to spread peace health and hope.
